The piece is to be played without a conductor. During rehearsals, the soloist or ensemble leader may take an instructional role, or an external coach. In rehearsals and performance, the players must sit so that they have eye contact with one another (e.g. in a semi-circle).

Sans chef (quelle difference: les musiciens s’écountent et écountent la musique pultôt que de suivre la battue métronomique de Vaillancourt), les quinze membres du NEM ont offert une pure revelation: Some reasons for hesitating, de la Britannique Juliana Hodkinson. Des bruits, comme une symphonie dïnsectes au loin. On s’appelle, se répond, sínterpelle, dans une discretion qui force l’attention. Plus qu’un climat est créé: une vraie communication, à la fois entre les musiciens eux-mêmes et entre eux et nous, du public. Déstabilisant et intrigant, bien qu’on ait déjà entendu certaines manifestations de ce type d’imagination et de ce genre d’art, mais conçu et réalisé avec un raffinement qui n’a d’égal que le Bonheur qu’il procure, ce morceau de musique pure valait à lui seul la soirèe. Que peut-il advenir de ce genre d-aventure? On ne le sait pas – et on ne veut meme pas le “savoir”! C’est ça, le risqué de la creation. C’est ça, le risqué de la nouveauté.

Juliana Hodkinson of Britain produced the most exciting piece. "Some reasons for hesitating" was redolent with a quiet tension that was mesmerizing. It met the challenge of attempting a new syntax, one that seemed to speak directly to this age where the way we communicate is so often fragmented and sparse.

Danach: Das Wunder. Flageoletttöne pirschen sich an, von der Grenze des Wahrnehmbaren. 15 Musiker stehen auf der Bühne. Es flattert, klopft, zirpt, pfeift etc. Diesmal spannt sich ein Klangfarbenbogen aus, sinnlich, zauberhaft, ergreifend. Juliana Hodkinson erinnert mit ihrem Stück "Some reasons for hesitating" daran, adss Neue Musik ein Abenteuer ist, keine akademische Stilgymnastik. Als am Ende das zärtliche Hauch-Schaben der Bleistifte auf den Geigensaiten verstummt, da sind wir alle mitten ganz wach und gut gelaunt.
